(Pokémon)

The Pokémon Company has certainly gotten more daring with its marketing recently, putting out such funky ads as a music video where Katy Perry sings with her best friend Pikachu and a meme-savvy take on "Never Gonna Give You Up" starring Bidoof. These ambitious marketing tactics have maintained a cheery, irreverent air consistent with the Pokémon franchise, but that all changed today when The Pokémon Company released a video in which a dude freakin' dies.

Granted, it's not confirmed someone dies in this clip, but it sure looks like it! In the extremely grainy, found footage horror-esque video, a nature documentarian is exploring the Hisui region, observing some Pokémon in their natural habitat. Eventually, he goes into a cave that has a "mysterious air" about it, finds an "adorable Pokémon," then appears to be attacked by something.

The clip seems like it wouldn't be out of place at the start of a horror game where someone says "This is the last transmission we received from [contact]. We need you to go to [mysterious planet] and investigate what happened."

It certainly caught the attention of Pokémon fans, who were intrigued by the mysteries within the video. What Pokémon did the researcher find? What attacked it? Why is Pokémon marketing Legends: Arceus like a survival horror game? And how in the hell does a guy have a video camera in ancient times?

Fans will have to wait until January of 2022 to see if they too can get attacked by a mysterious Pokémon and die in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
