Wendy O. Koopa is a villainous Nintendo character, a Koopaling who has appeared in multiple Super Mario titles since 1988.

Origin

Wendy O. Koopa's first appearance was as a mini-boss in Super Mario Bros. 3, released October 23rd, 1988 in Japan.^[1]

Spread

She has since appeared in multiple titles and spinoffs, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii U, Mario Kart 8, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate and many others. On January 21st, 2017, YouTuber ProSafia Gaming published a video featuring all of her boss battles in her 20 year existence (shown below).

#ProjectWendy

On January 1st, 2019, YouTube was flooded with Super Smash Brothers Ultimate content praising Wendy, who is an alternate skin for the Bowser Jr. character. This appears to have been a prank coordinated by Alpharad and other Super Smash Brothers YouTubers to make it appear as though Wendy was the most overpowered character in the game. The videos were sorted under the name "#ProjectWendy."^[2] Videos as part of the prank include a video by Alpharad that gained over 350,000 views (shown below, left). Another by Slimecicle gained over 280,000 views (shown below, right).

The flood of videos caused confusion and jokes on Twitter. User @groenboys tweeted a photoshopped still from The Simpsons about #ProjectWendy, gaining over 120 retweets (shown below, left). User @afrohawk52 posted a Jeb Wins parody, gaining 19 retweets and 72 likes (shown below, right).
