WAYTOODANK is a Twitch emote that shows the Gnome Child image expanding and exploding. Introduced in mid-2018, the BTTV emote is used in response to stream moments that are over-the-top to the point of sensory overload.

Origin

On April 14th, 2018, BetterTTV^[1] user pajlada uploaded the WAYTOODANK emote to the site depicting an animated image of the Gnome Child character inflating and then popping (shown below). As of January 2022, the emote is used on over 32,000 channels.

Spread

On April 5th, 2020, Urban Dictionary user laizy posted a definition^[2] of the emote, writing, "Refers to the effects of weed that is too strong, or any other overwhelming effects like bright colours, loud noises or things that could come from a bad trip" (shown below).

The emote has been associated with streamer xQc since 2020. For example, on October 25th, 2020, YouTuber SahaKit uploaded a compilation of xQc's "WAYTOODANK" moments, gaining over 80,000 views in over one year (shown below). Additionally, multiple threads titled "WAYTOODANK" or inquiring about the emote have appeared on xQc's subreddit.^[3][4][5]
