Vidas Solteiras Importam or Single Lives Matter in English refers to a sarcastic Brazilian-Portuguese catchphrase used by single people in ironic posts on social media to express that their lives matter too. The phrase, which is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, was popularized around June 2020, when Brazilians celebrate their version of Valentine's Day called Lover's Day.

Origin

The earliest post using the phrase "Vidas Solteiras Importam" (English: "Single Lives Matter") was posted on Facebook[1] by @fernanda.nene.18 on June 12th, 2020, the same day Lover's Day, the Brazilian version of Valentine's Day, is celebratd. The post (seen below) received 45 likes and 31 shares in three years.

Spread

The meme became a popular sarcastic phrase on Twitter, used to joke about posts involving couples doing cute things or partners showing their love for each other. For example, on June 12th, 2023, Twitter[2] user posted a Transformers meme captioned "Me fighting the creators of Valentine's Day." The tweet (seen below) was accompanied by the hashtag #vidassolteirasimportam, receiving 1,800 views and 142 likes in one day.

Another example, posted by Twitter[3] user @esquizopoc on February 7th, 2022, shows a clip from the Brazilian reality TV show A Fazenda and the caption "I can't stand seeing happy couples on social media anymore. ENOUGH! Single lives matter!" The post (seen below) garnered 317 likes and 73 retweets in a year.
