#ValentineGiftsForExes is a hashtag game in which Twitter users write spiteful ideas of what to gift their exes on Valentine's Day.

Origin

On February 9th, 2019, Twitter user @HashtagJones1[1] involved with @hashtagroundup, introduced the hashtag game in a tweet (shown below, left). The tweet was retweeted 43 times and liked 62 times in three days. The same Twitter user then posted an example with a GIF of Taylor Swift and the caption "Trash them in a song #ValentineGiftsForExes." The post gained 51 retweets and 131 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Spread

On February 9th, 2019, Twitter user @justmytweet, posted a GIF of Ariana Grande with the caption "a 'thank you' card" (shown below).


The same day, Twitter user @dirtbagmurphy[3] wrote "The divorce papers #ValentineGiftsForExes" which received 26 retweets and 88 likes (shown below, left). @DaSkrambledEgg[5] also tweeted saying, "A nails on a chalkboard mixtape #ValentineGiftsForExes" (shown below, right).

That day, Twitter user @bigdweeb[4] tweeted a picture of the "Mean Girls" burn book which gained 16 retweets and 41 likes in two days (shown below, left). @jwbutta[2] posted a picture of a candy heart that reads "u can die first" with the caption "A nice box of candy hearts #ValentineGiftsForExes" which accumulated 43 retweets and 149 likes in two days (shown below, right).

@Hashtagroundup then tweeted some of the best posts so far in a hashtag video recap (shown below).
