About

Thighland refers to a mispronunciation of Thailand made by Donald Trump during a campaign event in Ohio in early August 2020. The gaffe caused Twitter users to parody his statement with photoshopped images of Thailand and criticize his statement directly after the mispronunciation that he likes Thailand's leader.

Origin

On August 6th, 2020, Donald Trump made a series of speeches in Ohio.[1] That day, the Washington Post reporter Felicia Sonmez tweeted, "In Ohio speech just now, Trump pronounced Thailand 'Thigh-land,' before correcting himself" to which Twitter user @therecount responded with a video clip of the moment (shown below).

Spread

On August 7th, 2020, Twitter user @OhNoSheTwitnt[3] captioned the Trump Yelling At Lawn-mowing Boy image with "IT’S CALLED THIGHLAND BECAUSE THE BROADS THERE HAVE NICE GAMS!" which garnered over 1,700 likes in a day (shown below, left). That same day, Twitter user @iDGRic[4] shared a photoshopped map of Thailand with a chicken thigh over the country captioned, "Google maps satellite view of Thighland" (shown below, right).

That day, the hashtag #thighland began trending. Twitter user @atpmiuism[5] posted a meme regarding Thai people's reaction to the mispronunciation compared to his statement about liking their leaders (shown below). The tweet received over 4,400 retweets and 890 likes in a day. Mashable[2] published an article on Twitter reactions to the gaffe.
