The Moment I Realized I Could Sing refers to a series of videos purportedly showcasing the moment the subject being filmed learned they could sing, often showing the person singing a little, stopping and realizing they have a good voice, then continuing to sing. The videos are largely ironic in nature and tend to feature someone who cannot actually sing. They are based on a comedy video posted in June 2022 by TikToker @thomboi__. A trend based on the video was popularized on TikTok in May 2024 in which users sang the song "In The Bible" by Drake, also known as "I Did My Dance One Time On TikTok and Went Viral With It," while referencing the original viral video.

Origin

On June 4th and 19th, 2022, TikToker^[1][2] and comedian @thomboi__ posted parts one and two of a video captioned, "The moment I realized I could sing I can't believe I got it on video," garnering over 15.8 million and 11 million views, respectively, in two years (shown below, left and right). In the videos, the TikToker sings a segment of a song ("Eye of the Tiger" and "Jumper" respectively) then stops and reacts with shock, seemingly noticing their vocal talents for the first time.

Spread

The video became the subject of memes and recreations over the following years, becoming particularly popularized in 2024. For example, on November 1st, 2023, TikToker^[3] @mitsy270 posted a video recreating the original while singing "Creep," garnering over 8 million views in seven months (shown below).

On May 10th, 2024, TikToker^[4] @_trizzytr3 posted a video where a student learns he can sing during class by singing "I Did My Dance One Time On TikTok and Went Viral With It," garnering over 13 million views in a month (shown below, left). On May 13th, TikToker^[5] @boot_leg_chrollo posted a similar video, garnering over 15 million views in a month (shown below, right).

On June 5th, TikToker^[6] @.livelaughlobotomy posted a video in which she follows the same format while singing "Tongue Tied" by Grouplove, garnering over 11 million views in a week (shown below).
