Super Smash Bros. Ahegao Faces refers to the expressions female characters in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate after consuming the Spicy Curry item, which makes characters uncontrollably shoot fire, that resemble Ahegao faces.

Precursor

Lewd fan art of Super Smash Bros. characters has long been popular online. For example, Redditor BoomToast reposted artwork of the Super Smash Bros. Wii U roster with Ahegao faces to /r/smashbros,[1] gaining over 1,400 points (shown below).

Origin

After the December 7th, 2018 release of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Japanese Twitter users began sharing screenshots of female Smash characters after they'd eaten the Spicy Curry item, implying a comparison to Ahegao faces. For example, Twitter user @stama pointed out that one could see the desired faces by eating the curry then turning off the effects in training mode, demonstrating with Zelda (shown below).


Spread

Over the following days, many Japanese Twitter users posted other examples of Smash characters making the face. Stama also posted images with multiple characters, gaining over 6,00 retweets and 9,000 likes (shown below, left). User @megacockorock posted an example using Inkling Girl, gaining over 5,200 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below, right).

On December 13th, NintendoLife[2] posted about the trend. This brought it to the attention of Western users, many of whom were knowledgeable of the faces and expressed their disgust. User @MXTolvo posted None of You Are Free of Sin (shown below, left) and User @AtheneAllen posted that they recognized Daisy's Ahegao face (shown below, right). This was covered by The Daily Dot.[3]
