Your Name, known in Japan as Kimi no Na wa, is a 2016 Japanese anime film that tells the tale of a high school boy and girl who swap bodies. It is the highest-grossing anime film of all time and is being made into a live-action film by director J.J. Abrams.
History
Your Name was written and directed by Makoto Shinaki.[1] It is based by Shinaki's novel of the same name. Shinaki sent his proposal to the Toho film company on September 14th, 2014, and the film was put into production, undergoing several title changes before landing on Your Name. On April 7th, 2016, the trailer was uploaded to YouTube by TOKYOPOP TV, where it gained over 4.7 million views.
The film debuted on July 3rd, 2016 at the Anime Expo of 2016 in California before being released in Japan on August 26th, 2016. An English dub began screening in November of 2016 (English dub trailer shown below).
The film became the highest-grossing anime film of all time, grossing $303 million in Japan and holding the top spot at the box office for 12 weeks.[2]
J.J. Abrams Adaptation
On September 27th, 2017, it was announced that J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures had won the right to adapt the anime into a live-action film.[2] The screenplay will be written by Eric Heissresser, who received an Academy Award nomination for the film Arrival. The news was met with some skepticism. Kotaku[3] pointed to other recent American adaptations of popular anime, such as Netflix's Death Note, as cause for fans being "less than enthusiastic."
Reception
The film was mostly very well received by critics. It has a score of 79/100 on Metacritic[4] and a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes.[5] Critics lauded the dream-like structure of the film, as well as its artistic style and emotional impact.
Fandom
The film has a strong online fandom. It has a dedicated subreddit[6] with over 2,600 readers. A Facebook fan page for the film has over 51,000 likes.[7] There is also a strong community on Tumblr of people who share GIFs and stills from the film.[8] On DeviantArt there are over 2,200 pieces posted under the #kimi no na wa[9] tag (examples shown below).
