History

On February 25th, 2021, Pixar premiered the teaser trailer for Luca on YouTube,[1] where it gained 7.8 million views in four months (shown below).

On April 28th, 2021, the official Pixar[3] channel uploaded the full extended trailer for the movie, getting 17.6 million views in three months (shown below).

Luca premiered at the Aquarium of Genoa on June 13th, 2021, and was originally set to be theatrically released in the U.S. on June 18th. However, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film was released direct-to-streaming on Disney+.

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes,[2] the film holds an approval rating of 90 percent based on 260 reviews, with an average rating of 7.30/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Slight but suffused with infectious joy, the beguiling Luca proves Pixar can play it safe while still charming audiences of all ages." According to Metacritic,[4] which assigned a weighted average score of 71 out of 100 based on 52 critics, the film received "generally favorable reviews."

However, Phil De Semlyen, writing for Time Out, branded the film a "letdown," writing "Charming but slight, Luca definitely isn't Pixar firing on all cylinders. The studio's trademark daring, pin-sharp sight gags, and big ideas are missing from a fishy coming-of-age yarn that's a little damp around the edges."

Lorenzo Pushing Child

Lorenzo Pushing Child, also known as Lorenzo Tossing Child or Lorenzo Throwing Child, refers to a screenshot depicting the character Lorenzo pushing a child into the water. Online, it has been used mostly as an object-labeling or reaction image, often referencing a situation where something is mercilessly discarded or casually tossed aside, or alternatively to signal disgust or otherwise general apathy towards something without malice (shown below).
