Indian Matchmaking is a Netflix original reality television series that follows Indian matchmaker Sima across the United States and India working with single Indians and their families to find them a spouse. The show, which released on Netflix in July 2020, became a top trending show on the streaming service and the subject of a variety of Twitter memes.

History

On July 9th, 2020, Netflix released the official trailer for Indian Matchmaking to YouTube (shown below). The video gained over 331,600 views and 4,000 likes in 12 days. On July 16th, the full first season was released to Netflix.

Reception

On July 16th, 2020, Twitter users began using the hashtag #IndianMatchmaking to comment on the series. Twitter user @bhumipurohit[1] tweeted, "Watched #IndianMatchmaking to confirm what I thought I knew about sexism, casteism, and classism in Indian/Indian American marriage markets. Sadly, confirmations confirmed. Go on now, tell me about how you want someone not too dark. Caste doesn't matter but must fit our culture" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 1,900 likes in five days. The next day, Twitter user @snehaliz[2] shared some popular opinions by tweeting, "I’m on episode three of #IndianMatchmaking and here are my thoughts: 1.) Aparna is so damm annoying and will never find love. 2.) Nadia is an absolute sweetheart and she deserves the best guy ever. 3.) Pradhyumans is in the closet" (shown below, right). The tweet accumulated over 1,200 likes and 180 retweets in four days.

My Efforts Are Meaningless, If The Stars Are Not Aligned is a captioned reaction image of the matchmaker Sima. On July 19th, 2020, Twitter user @SimplySandile[3] used the image and tweeted, "The next time anyone asks me why I’m still single. #IndianMatchmaking" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 4,300 likes in two days. The next day, Twitter user @blahnessss[4] used the same image captioning it, "Me giving up after ten minutes into my workout session. #IndianMatchmaking" (shown below, right). The tweet received over 260 likes in a day.
