Borderlands is an upcoming 2024 adventure comedy film based on the video game series of the same name. The live-action movie stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jack Black as treasure hunters on an off-world planet rumored to hide a massive treasure trove. In February 2024, the first trailer for the film premiered, prompting an influx of reactions and memes around the internet.

History

On May 14th, 2021, Borderlands, a film based on the video game series of the same name, was announced.^[1] In June 2021, the main cast of the film was then released, with Cate Blanchett playing Lilith, Kevin Hart playing Roland, Jack Black voicing Claptrap the robot and Jamie Lee Curtis playing Tannis.^[2]

On July 20th, 2023, the premiere date for the film was announced, set to release on August 9th, 2024.^[3]

On February 20th, 2024, People^[4] published the first-look article on the movie teasing images of the main characters. On that day, X^[5] / Twitter user @Wario64 posted images from the article, with the post gaining over 2,000 reposts and 16,000 likes in one day (shown below).

Later on February 20th, the poster for the film was released on social media^[6] (shown below), followed by a teaser trailer.^[7]

On February 21st, 2024, the first official trailer for Borderlands was released on the Lionsgate Movies YouTube channel, accumulating over 300,000 views in three hours (shown below).^[8]

Online Reactions

The release of the poster and trailer for Borderlands in February 2024 was followed by numerous posts expressing skepticism about the quality of the upcoming movie, with users citing outdated "millennial writing" associated with the series, Borderlands coming out long enough ago to seem irrelevant and the movie's casting choices (shown below, left and right).^[9]^[10] For example, a post by user @MaxKriegerVG received over 20 reposts and 320 likes on X in one day.

Other users hyped up Cate Blanchett starring in the film. For example, on February 20th, 2024, X^[11] user @emilyorchard made a post that garnered over 270 reposts and 1,300 likes in one day (shown below, right).
