About

Better Call Saul is an American drama television series starring Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman. A spin-off and prequel to the TV series Breaking Bad, the show follows Jimmy McGill as he grows into his alter ego of the Breaking Bad character Saul Goodman, a criminal defense attorney. The series premiered in 2015 and went on to receive critical acclaim and numerous awards, with the final season releasing in 2022.

History

Development of the show began in 2009, during the third season of Breaking Bad.^[1] Odenkirk said, "I think it was the last episode of the third season that Vince came to me in the hallway at the offices in Albuquerque and said, 'What do you think about a spinoff? I think there’s a show in this.'"

On September 11th, 2013, AMC and Sony Pictures Television officially announced the spin-off with the working title "Better Call Saul."^[2] They said, "As conceived, the new series is based on the show’s popular Saul Goodman character with the working title Better Call Saul. Plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer."

The following year, on September 21st, 2014, the first teaser for the series premiered on AMC's YouTube account, where it received more than 291,000 views in less than seven years (shown below, left). Several weeks later, the account featured a promotional music video for the series that received more than 1.2 million views (shown below, right).

On December 22nd, AMC published the first trailer for the first season of Better Call Saul. The video received more than 1.3 million views in less than seven years (shown below).

The series' first episode premiered on May 8th, 2015. As of 2021, five seasons of the show have aired.

Final Season

On March 10th, 2022, the official Twitter^[8] account of the show announced that a final season was upcoming in a tweet that received roughly 38,700 likes over the course of five days (shown below, left). On March 14th, 2022, Bob Odenkirk also announced the final season in a tweet,^[9] receiving roughly 41,400 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Additionally, on March 10th, the show tweeted a trailer for the final season that received roughly 356,600 views and 18,500 likes in five days (shown below).

The announcement poster inspired redraws shortly after it was posted. For instance, Twitter^[10] user blackbeltsgeord tweeted one on March 14th that replaced the coloring with yellow and recaptioned it, "Bohemian Rhapsody 2," earning over 230 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). On the 11th, Twitter^[11] user Angela16_6 tweeted one that recaptioned it, "Cinnabon Saul," earning over 40 likes in five days (shown below, right).

Reception

Better Call Saul received mostly positive reviews from critics. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, ^[3] the show boasts a 97 percent Fresh rating based on reviews of the first five seasons. On Metacritic,^[4] the series received "Universal Acclaim" and the "Must Watch" designation. They scored the series a rating of 84.

Fandom

On April 29th, 2012, Redditor beyphy launched the subreddit /r/BetterCallSaul.^[7] Within nine years, the group amassed more than 253,000 subscribers.

The verified Better Call Saul Facebook ^[5] page, which launched on April 28th, 2014, has more than 1.9 million likes and followers as of February 2021. The show's Twitter ^[6] account, which launched in September 2013, has more than 400,000 followers as of February 2021.
