About

"Scott Pilgrim Ruined a Whole Generation of Women" is a 2019 song by incelcore artist Negative XP. The lyrics of the song argue that Ramona Flowers, a character from the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and from the Scott Pilgrim comic books, became a role model for a generation of young women, making them more frivolous, promiscuous and self-absorbed. Starting in 2020, the name of the song gained virality as the phrasal template format "X Ruined a Whole Generation of Y," with a YouTube comment known as This Song Goes Very Hard, Love From Kazahkstan also gaining prominence as a reaction.

She saw Ramona Flowers
And felt so empowered
By a movie made in Hollywood
It's sad to think she's someone's daughter
Like a lamb to the slaughter
But honestly, I'd still hit if I could

X Has Ruined an Entire Generation of Y

While the catchphrase format "X Ruined an Entire Generation" has been independently used before, the name of the song led to the popularization of the "X Ruined a Whole Generation of Y" (alternatively "X Ruined an Entire Generation of Y") snowclone format.

The first viral instances of the phrasal template's use are Twitter posts dating to spring 2020. For example, on March 31st, 2020, Twitter[4] user @EpicFunnyName tweeted, "steven universe ruined a whole generation of cartoon reviewers," with the tweet gaining over 210 retweets and 1,500 likes in roughly two years. On April 22nd, 2020, Twitter[5] user @djoats02 tweeted, "demon slayer ruined an entire generation of weebs," with the post accumulating over 650 retweets and 7,700 likes in a similar timeframe. On May 14th, Twitter[6] user @MeganBitchell quote tweeted a video of a subway prank, writing, "The Eric Andre Show ruined a whole generation of men." The tweet received over 2,800 retweets and 52,300 likes also in roughly two years (shown below).

More viral posts using the snowclone were posted in 2021 and 2022. For example, on May 3rd, 2021, Twitter[7] user @OscarVsTheWrldd made a tweet about YouTubers LeafyIsHere, KEEMSTAR and GradeAUnderA that gained over 200 retweets and 2,500 likes in roughly a year (shown below, left). On July 18th, 2022, Twitter[8] user @GRIMVVICE made a tweet about YouTuber Fidias that received over 8,300 retweets and 197,000 likes in two months (shown below, right).

"This Song Goes Very Hard, Love From Kazakhstan"

Prior to August 2nd, 2019, YouTuber косим made a comment on a now-unavailable upload of the song, writing, "this song goes very hard, love from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿, I hate women so much it's unreal" (shown below). The comment received viral spread online as a screenshot of it was circulated. For example, on August 2nd, 2019, Redditor Ronaxi posted a screenshot to the /r/comedyheaven[9] subreddit, where it gained over 1,900 upvotes in roughly three years. A November 1st, 2019, repost in the same subreddit[10] received over 8,100 upvotes in a similar timeframe.

In the following years, the comment has also been used as a copypasta and referenced online.
