Sad Cat Meowing is an exploitable viral video clip of a cat meowing in what's a perceivably sad manner. The video of the cat was uploaded to TikTok in June 2023 by @birdbirdcat and became the subject of memes later that year, including green screen edits placing the cat in various settings.

On June 12th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @birdbirdcat posted a video captioned "why so sad" of a cat meowing in a perceivably sad manner with a sad expression on its face, garnering over 1.5 million views in seven months (shown below). On June 27th, TikToker^[2] @wonderfulday.52 reuploaded the video, garnering over 42.8 million views in the same span of time.

The cat seems to belong to Instagram^[8] user guangdang005, who may have uploaded and deleted the sad cat meowing video earlier than this date, however, their earliest upload of the same video was posted on August 18th, 2023.

Spread

The video became the subject of memes throughout 2023. On August 27th, 2023, TikToker^[3] @maksym95piano posted a Duet to the video playing piano over it, garnering over 4 million views in five months (shown below, left). On October 22nd, TikToker^[4] @daykookie posted a meme using a green screen of the cat that gained over 5.2 million views in three months (shown below, right).

An alternate format began going viral in December 2023 featuring the sad cat interacting with another cat.^[5] For example, on December 4th, TikToker^[6] @relationshipmemez posted a meme that gained over 9.7 million views in a month (shown below, left). On December 7th, TikToker^[7] @day1day365 posted a meme that gained over 5.4 million views in a month (shown below, right).
