Origin

On February 5th, 2022, late queen Elizabeth II laughed and joked with guests at a Sandringham tea party celebrating her 70th anniversary accession to the British throne. As she plunged a knife into a celebratory cake, the queen said jokingly “I’ll put the knife in, see if it works,” before leaving the cutting to someone else,”somebody else can finish it off.” The moment was posted on YouTube[1] by Reuters (shown below), amassing over 171,000 views and 3,800 likes in a year.

Spread

Around early-December 2023, a green screen version of the Queen’s video cutting the cake became an exploitable meme on TikTok. For instance, on December 13th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @kidney.bean.brown added the green-screen version of the Queen cutting a cake alongside a montage of an eye and the overlay text “me and bestie doing d.i.y lobotomys.” The post (shown below, left) garnered more than 2.6 million plays and 424,000 likes in two weeks. On December 19th, 2023, TikTok[3] user @heeheememes used the same exploitable video in a montage about doctors in the late 1930s when “someone was mentally ill.” The video (shown below, right) received more than 6.5 million plays and 1.2 million likes in a week.
