My Son the Hurricane Band Dancing, also known as My Son the Hurricane Big Band Dance, refers to a viral video of the Canadian brass funk band My Son the Hurricane dancing while performing on stage at the North Country Fair in mid-2023. They're led by the lead female singer who's dressed in pink. The video was reposted from their TikTok account @mysonthehurricane to Twitter / X where people joked about their performance and made memes, many drawing comparisons to other big bands like Black Country, New Road.

Origin

On July 11th, 2023, the band My Son the Hurricane posted a video to their TikTok[1] account @mysonthehurricane that showed them performing their song "Mr. Holland’s Locust." In the video, their lead singer is dressed in pink and they all take a dance break, moving side to side with exaggerated facial expressions. Over nine months, the video received roughly 4.4 million plays and 276,700 likes (shown below).

After it went viral on TikTok, users reacted en masse via duets and stitches. For instance, on July 12th, 2023, TikToker[2] @andrew_bartek posted a duet that compared the band to Black Country, New Road, gaining over 506,600 plays and 43,600 likes in nine months (shown below, left).

On July 15th, TikToker[3] @jasonjdominguez_ posted a video in which he green-screened himself on stage with a guitar, receiving over 107,800 plays and 2,700 likes in nine months (shown below, right).

On July 30th, 2023, X[4] user @holzawn reposted the video, also using it to make fun of the band Black Country, New Road. His tweet received over 19,000 likes in nine months (shown below).

Others on X started to quote the video with their own jokes, like X[5] user @SkinnyTuna on July 31st, who said, "Just unmuted this video for the first time why are they playing Bowsers Castle music," gaining over 17,000 likes in nine months (shown below, left).

On August 2nd, 2023, X[6] user @LolOverruled quoted it, combing the White People at the Function and No One phrasal templates, labeling the group, "The polycule at the function," earning over 9,000 likes in eight months (shown below, right).

The video resurfaced in memes in April 2024, predominantly due to a tweet shared by X[7] user @dogmatic_shorty on April 15th, 2024, who captioned it, "This is actually what it’s like when its finally summer in Portland," earning over 19,000 likes in four days (shown below).
