My Area 51 Alien refers to jokes made by social media users as the satirical Storm Area 51 Facebook event went viral in which they imagined the humorous scenarios they would get into with the aliens they rescued from the top-secret US military base long-rumored to house information about extra terrestrials.

Origin

The satirical "Storm Area 51" Facebook event launched June 27th, 2019, and by July 12th, 2019, the event, boosted by word of mouth and news coverage, had over 400,000 attendees.[1] On July 11th, Twitter users began making humorous posts about what they imagined life would be like with the alien they rescued from Area 51. One of the earliest, posted by Twitter user @lajay87,[2] gained over 1,100 retweets and 7,000 likes (shown below).

Over the following day, many more jokes were made about "my Area 51 alien" using a picture of a small extra-terrestrial figure standing in a doorway. User @Kat_PennyLane[3] made such a joke that gained over 12,000 retweets and 66,000 likes (shown below, left). User @Aqua_874[4] posted an example that gained over 4,400 retweets and 21,000 likes (shown below, right).


The meme was referenced by Jonas Brother Kevin Jonas as he posted a Howard the Alien referencing the meme in support of an upcoming tour (shown below, top). Responding to a fan, rapper Lil Nas X said he would support the raiders of Area 51[5] (shown below, bottom left). This led user @travis_stranger[6] to joke that Lil Nas X's alien would appear on an Old Town Road remix (shown below, right). Jokes were covered by Twitter Moments.[7]
