About

Munch is a slang term that originates from Bronx drill rapper Ice Spice and her song "Munch (Feelin' U)," known in memes for its leading catchphrase "You Thought I Was Feeling You?" The meaning of "munch" is akin to the word simp, as in a man who is only good for giving oral sex on a woman due to his blind obsession with said woman. It was coined in mid-2022 and spread to memes on Twitter, TikTok and elsewhere.

Origin

On August 10th, 2022, the YouTube channel of WorldStarHipHop uploaded the music video for Ice Spice's song "Munch (Feelin' U)," earning over 2.5 million views in three weeks (shown below). Also on August 10th, Ice Spice posted the video to Twitter,[1] earning roughly 1.3 million views and 35,200 likes.

On August 17th, 2022, the term was then added to Urban Dictionary [2] by user longidoanlstiff, who defined it as, "A eater, or a super simp who do anything for a girl off the thought that she is feeling him," and received over 475 likes in one month.

Ice Spice was interviewed by Spotify's outlet RapCaviar on September 12th, 2022, in which she gave "relationship advice" and defined the word "munch." She said, "A munch is basically just a eater, like it could be a eater both ways. Like they really just on your body, like just a hater, or it could just be like somebody that's really obsessed with you that's just fiending to eat it." Over the course of eight days, the video received roughly 1.2 million views and 10,200 likes on Twitter[3] (shown below).

Spread

After Ice Spice tweeted[1] her music video on August 10th, 2022, users on the platform picked up on the slang term's meaning and started using it in the replies. For instance, on August 10th, Twitter[4] user juhvanci replied with a video of rapper Rick Ross exclaiming, "Imma eat it," in a gym, captioning it, "I’m a munch," and earning roughly 2,800 likes in one month (shown below). Early on, most tweets[5] using "munch" followed this idea of the tweeter professing their affection for Ice Spice, willingly being a munch for her.

After the music video's release, predominantly male video creators and Twitch streamers started posting reactions to it, many making fun of Ice Spice's look compared to her song's lyrics. For instance, on August 11th, 2022, Twitch streamer TheSNSKings posted his reaction to TikTok,[8] laughing at the lyrics and gaining roughly 1.1 million plays and 146,600 likes over the course of three weeks (shown below, left). On August 17th, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat reacted to "Munch." The clip landed on YouTube[9] where it earned roughly 112,500 views, but also appeared on TikTok (shown below, right).

On August 27th, 2022, Twitter[6] user sonadiaww tweeted, "being a eater is one thing but being a MUNCH? πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚," earning roughly 17,100 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On August 28th, 2022, Twitter[7] user sexdrugshugs replied to sonadiaww with a recaptioned image of 21 Savage holding up a sign reading, "I'm A Munch Too," gaining over 970 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).
