Origin

On December 3rd, 2018, chapter one "Dog & Chainsaw" of the Chainsaw Man manga series, created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, was released.[1] In the chapter, the character Makima, a high-ranking devil hunter with Public Safety Devil Hunters organization in Japan, is first introduced (several panels shown below).

Throughout the course of the series, Makima takes the main protagonist, Denji, as her human pet, forcing him to work for Public Safety while manipulating him with promises of a romantic and sexual relationship and threatening to exterminate him should he attempt to disobey her.

Spread

Following the increasing popularity of Chainsaw Man manga series in late 2020 and 2021, Makima achieved widespread recognition as a waifu, becoming a subject of fan art, memes and hornyposting (fan art examples shown below).

Bark for Me / Makima Woofers

The dynamic between Denji and Makima is similar to that of a dog and its master. On more than one occasion,[2][3] Makima calls Denji her "dog" or treats him like a pet, with Denji reciprocating (example panels shown below).

Fans of the series often react to fan art and cosplay of Makima by barking, typing comments such as "woof" and "bark" to reference the dynamic between her and Denji in the manga. These commentators have sometimes been referred to as "Makima woofers."

On March 13th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @StormYorha posted fan art of Makima, writing "makima told you to bark for her," with some users responding with comments imitating the barking of a dog. On March 19th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @todopokie posted a photograph of her Makima cosplay, writing "bark for me." The tweet received over 5,800 retweets and 54,300 likes, with multiple users responding in the requested manner. In the following days, screenshots of the thread received viral spread online.[6]

Starting in late March 2021, the request "bark for me" gained a strong association with fan art and cosplay of Makima, with instances of independent use also appearing.

Makima's "Bang"

Makima's 'Bang' refers to a panel from Chainsaw Man in which Makima kills the character Power by obliterating her torso with an invisible force seemingly channeled through her index finger. Online, the panel has been edited in various ways as an exploitable, with Power often replaced with characters from various franchises.
