About

Last Night We Let The X Talk, sometimes formulated as Last Night We Let the X Do the Talking, is a phrasal template that was popularized on Twitter / X in 2023 and 2024 and is largely a vehicle to highlight the humorous names of food products. Originally referencing a lyric from the Morgan Wallen song "Last Night," the memes appear as both image captions and standalone catchphrases.

Origin

While the phrase "let the wine do the talking" has been a small cliché for years[1] intended to mean opening up about one's feelings under the influence of alcohol, memetic use of the phrase picked up following the release of the Morgan Wallen song "Last Night," which opens with the line "Last night, we let the liquor talk." The song, released in January 2023,[2] topped the U.S. country charts at that time.[3]

One of the first notable humorous posts featuring the lyric was posted on June 3rd, 2023, by Twitter user @pissboymcgee[4], who captioned a video of a rotating, naked man with the lyric, gaining over 600 retweets and 5,900 likes in 10 months (shown below).

Spread

Snowclone edits began growing in popularity towards the end of 2023. For example, on October 6th, 2023, Twitter user @cumuncher[5] posted a snowclone replacing "liquor" with "autism," gaining over 290 retweets and 2,300 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On October 23rd, user @bobbylikesbeers[6] posted an edit replacing "liquor" with "6mg Zyn," gaining over 350 retweets and 2,900 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).

On January 8th, 2024, Twitter user @eggeatingunit[7] posted the snowclone with Josh Wine, gaining over 680 retweets and 13,000 likes in four months in one of the more viral examples of the meme surrounding the product (shown below, left). On March 15th, user @grace_roso[8] posted an example using a wine called The Fat Bastard, gaining over 570 retweets and 8,800 likes in one month (shown below, right).
