I Need You, I Need You refers to a TikTok sound used in 2022, wherein, users showed their friends, giving them each text overlay describing what they humorously "need" as the lyrics repeated. The sound came from a 2015 Chris Brown song called "Ayo." Compilations spread to YouTube in May 2022.
Origin
On May 1st, 2022, TikToker[1] sjuggin used the song "Ayo"[2] by Chris Brown and Tyga in a video that earned roughly 476,200 plays and 50,500 likes in 19 days (shown below, left). Inspired by the video, on May 5th, 2022, TikToker[3] salmatoowavyy posted a video using sjuggin's sound, making a skit about calling her homegirl after a night out which earned roughly 924,400 plays and 260,700 likes in 15 days (shown below, right).
Spread
Going into the remainder of May, more TikTokers started using sjuggin's sound. A more identifiable trend emerged, wherein, TikTokers showed all of their friends, adding text over each of them stating what they "needed" in accordance with the sound's lyrics. The first creator to post a video like this was TikToker[4] marco.0113 on May 9th, 2022, whose video earned roughly 1.7 million plays and 382,300 likes in 11 days (shown below, left). On May 11th, 2022, TikToker[5] mill_ee3 posted a new iteration, earning roughly 641,300 plays and 138,400 likes in nine days (shown below, right).
On May 16th, 2022, the YouTube channel LΓ©ftyy posted a compilation of "i need you..i need you" TikToks, earning roughly 19,400 views over the course of four days (shown below).
