I Maxed Out One Million on My Credit Cards and Fled the USA refers to a Chinese social media post shared by a user named 猎户执剑人 who alleged that they left the United States after maxing out their credit cards from various banks and companies like Chase, CitiBank and American Express and not paying the debt, totaling about $140,000 or 1,000,000 CN¥. In their defense, the user said, "I always remember that I am Chinese and my mission is to revive China!" Furthermore, "This is also a strong blow to American imperialism!!! A final lesson for American capitalists!!!" The post was originally shared on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu (aka "Little Red Book"). It was then screenshotted and went viral on Reddit and Twitter / X in May 2024.

Origin

On May 14th, 2024, X[1] user @xijinpingdiguo tweeted a screenshot of a post shared on Xiaohongshu (aka "Little Red Book") from a user named 猎户执剑人 who wrote, "信用卡刷了100w逃离美国…" translating to, "I swiped 1 million on my credit card and fled the United States…" (shown below, left). The X user posted the image with multiple question marks as the caption, receiving over 482,400 views and 950 likes in two days.

On May 15th, Redditor[2] Fuzzy_Worldliness_96 shared the Chinese screenshot to /r/facepalm, including screenshots translated into English (shown below, right). The post's caption was, "International student fled after maxing out credit card," receiving over 23,000 upvotes in one day.

In English, the Chinese user's post reads:

I maxed out one million on my credit cards and fled the USA…

Fellow netizens, I'm graduating from university and about to leave. Before returning to China, I maxed out my credit cards from various banks (personal and business cards totaling $140,000. Equivalent to 1,000,000 CN¥!!!)

A big thank you to Chase, Citibank, and American Express for supporting me over the past three years. as Although your banking services are excellent, I always remember that I am Chinese and my mission is to revive China!

Let me use this first pot of gold in my life to contribute to my motherland! This is also a strong blow to American imperialism!!! A final lesson for American capitalists!!!

Currently, the original post on Xiaohongshu (aka "Little Red Book") has not been discovered. Regardless, multiple Chinese netizens have written articles[3][4] on the topic starting on May 15th. Also, a user on Weibo[5] shared a post about it on May 15th, gaining over 1,300 likes in a day.

As of May 16th, 2024, searching the original user's name "猎户执剑人" on Xiaohongshu provides no results, indicating that they could have deleted their account.

Spread

Chinese-speaking internet users shared the post on X,[6] Threads [7] and Dealmoon[8] on May 14th, 2024. On the /r/facepalm post, various Redditors shared viral comments, such as Redditor[9] HotEntertainment2825, whose comment sparked a thread in which users debated if the post was satire and whether or not the Chinese user's plan would backfire (shown below).

On May 15th, X[10] user @bubblebabyboi tweeted the translated screenshot, adding an Engrish caption that referenced the Ouhhh… Husbant… Now We Are Homeress… meme, receiving over 6,300 likes in a day (shown below, left).

Later on May 15th, 2024, X[11] user @francisxwolf tweeted the screenshot, captioned, "based," receiving over 70,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Similar threads surfaced on 4chan, such as a post shared on /pol/ [12] which received numerous replies (shown below).
