I Just Think They're Neat refers to a scene from The Simpsons in which Marge Simpson attempts to persuade Bart to take a potato to school for show and tell on the grounds she thinks "they're neat." Captioned screenshots of the scene, with various objects photoshopped over the potato, are used by people online to illustrate things they like.

Origin

The scene comes from Season 5, episode 19 of The Simpsons, which aired April 28th, 1994.^[1] In the episode, Bart Simpson, dissuaded from showing home videos in class for show and tell, starts wondering what he can show instead. Marge Simpson suggests a potato, saying she "just thinks they're neat".

Spread

On December 26th, 2010, YouTube user "sitsitsitonyou" posted a video clip of the scene which as of June 1st, 2019 has almost 122,000 views and over 1.1 thousand likes.^[2] On October 5th, 2011, Reddit user bookey23 posted a screenshot of Marge from the episode holding a potato, gaining 152 upvotes and 17 comments (shown below, left).^[3] On June 10th, 2013 Tumblr user "simpsonsscreencaps" posted a captioned version of the photo, gaining 71,985 notes (shown below, right).^[4]

Over the following years, the image became an object labeling meme wherein the potato was labeled different things and Marge's line altered to fit the meme. For example, on August 13th, 2017, the Facebook page Wholesome Memes posted a wholesome variation, gaining over 7,600 likes and reactions^[5] (shown below, left). On February 13th, 2019, Reddit, user MegaKrispyKreme^[6] posted a Red Dead Redemption 2 meme to /r/reddeadredemption, gaining over 630 points (shown below, right).
