About

Glass Breaks, generally expressed between two asterisks to indicate action, is a recurring shitposting copypasta referencing the breaking glass sound effect that appears in the beginning of the notable Death Grips song "You Might Think He Loves You For Your Money But I Know What He Really Loves You For It's Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat." The sound effect, often included along with the mimicked screaming of vocalist MC Ride, is often spammed on the 4chan Music board, /mu/.

Origin

On November 13th, 2013, the music video for the song "You Might Think He Loves You For Your Money But I Know What He Really Loves You For It's Your Brand New Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" was uploaded to Youtube. The first track on their third studio album Government Plates, the video features vocalist MC Ride in an extreme closeup. The song begins with a sound effect of glass breaking.

The first instance of the term glass breaks being used in the context of Death Grips on /mu/ is the day of the video's release, when a user began a thread comparing the introductory tracks to different albums.[1]

Spread

Due to the frequent shitposting of Death Grips in /mu/, glass breaks had been used in green text in threads regarding the band's music, releases, and personalities. However use remained at a low frequency for the duration of 2013. The first known instance of the phrase being used in a shitpost on /mu/ occurred the following year, on October 30th, 2014, when a user posted glass breaks followed by a long string of E's, to indicate MC Ride's scream.[2] The post received 92 replies, and several similar posts were created that day.

The shitposting escalated in the months preceding the massively-hyped second album of the Death Grips double LP, Jenny Death, with multiple threads reaching bump limit a day. Glass break* was a very frequent post, along with other popular phrases about the band, including "Zach Here, Thanks Man" (referencing drummer, Zach Hill), and frequent jokes about the appearance of Zach Hill, MC Ride, and Andy Morin on 4chan. The use peaked shortly after Death Grips first release with their side project, the i.l.y's, however as Death Grips are still a staple of /mu/, the phrase is still often frequently used in threads discussing Death Grips.[4] Glass breaks has been used on /mu/ in the context of Death Grips approximately 1,700 times as of March 2016.[3]
