Give Carly Rae Jepsen a Sword refers to a joke campaign to give the pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen a sword. Started in January of 2018, the joke came to fruition in August of that year when a fan gave Jepsen a sword while she was performing at Lollapalooza.

Origin

On January 1st, 2018, Tumblr user swordlesbianopinions[1] posted:

petition to give carly rae jepsen a sword
i like her and think she should have one

The post gained over 57,000 notes (shown below).


Spread

In the following months, the post inspired a satirical social media campaign to get Carly Rae Jepsen a sword. On February 25th, 2018, Twitter user and writer @jpbrammer tweeted about the movement, gaining 340 retweets and over 2,200 likes (shown below, left). On March 8th, 2018, Twitter user @KateAronoff posted an image of journalist Paul Mason holding a sign photoshopped to read "Give Carly Rae Jepsen a Sword," gaining 9 retweets and over 100 likes (shown below, right).


In April of 2018, a novelty Twitter account devoted to daily updates on whether Jepsen had a sword launched.[2] Additionally, fan art and photoshops depicting Jepsen with a sword began spreading online (examples shown below).


On August 4th, 2018, during Jepsen's set at Lollapalooza, she received an inflatable sword from the crowd while singing "Cut to the Feeling" (shown below).



The moment was celebrated online and covered by AV Club.[3] Jepsen posted fan art of herself with a sword to Instagram, thanking her fandom for the movement (shown below).
