Background

On January 11th, 2019, The Daily Star[1] published an interview with Dwayne Johnson under the headline "The Rock lays the smackdown to Daily Star as Dwayne Johnson hits out at snowflakes." In the interview, The Daily Star quoted The Rock as saying:

So many good people fought for freedom and equality – but this generation are looking for a reason to be offended. If you are not agreeing with them then they are offended – and that is not what so many great men and women fought for… People can be who they want, be with who they want, and live how they want. That can only be a good thing – but generation snowflake or, whatever you want to call them, are actually putting us backwards.”

Developments

The interview spread via reports from sites including Mashable[2] and TheMarySue,[3] the latter of which crticized Johnson's comments as offensive. The same day the interview was published, Johnson posted a video to his Instagram categorically denying the interview ever took place, saying that it was "100% fabricated." He went on to say he never insults groups of people in his interviews. The video gained over 6 million views (shown below).

The Rock's denial was covered by many outlets including AV Club,[4] The Guardian,[5] and This Is Insider.[6] The Daily Star has since deleted the article.
