Background

On April 1st, 2020, Swizz Beats and Timbaland organized a "beat battle" competition between T-Pain and Scott Storch, though T-Pain was eventually replaced with Mannie Fresh.[1] The battle was part of an ongoing series that had previously featured Swizz Beatz vs. Timbaland, Ne-Yo vs. Johnta Austin, Sean Garrett vs. The-Dream, and Hit-Boy vs. Boi-1da. The competition took place on April 1st at 9 P.M. Mannie Fresh played a collection of his hits, which include "Get Ya Roll On" and "Back That Azz Up," while Storch played songs like "Candy Shop," "Baby Boy," and "Gimme That."

Developments

After the competition, Swizz Beats declared Storch the winner, posting his scorecard to Instagram.[2]

Others debated about the "official" ruling of the battle. Twitter user @oldmanebro[3] concluded that Storch won because Mannie Fresh played too many obscure songs (shown below, left). User @maurachanz[4] wrote, "Back That Azz Up is a negro spiritual and because of that, the ancestors are PROUD. We salute the legend, Mannie Fresh," gaining over 760 retweets and 1,900 likes (shown below, right). The battle was covered by Vibe.[5]
