Background

On July 10th, 2022, the official Twitter[1] of Lo-fi Girl @lofigirl uploaded a tweet announcing that the 24-hour livestream video "Lo-fi Hip Hop Study Mix," which has garnered a wide following online, had been taken down due to a copyright claim by FMC Music Sdn Bhd Malaysia. The tweet received more than 85,700 likes and 11,400 retweets in one day (shown below).

Online Reactions

On July 11th, 2022, Twitter[2] user @NobleOFF uploaded a screenshot of the Lo-Fi Girl stream right before it was stopped, showing it had streamed for more than 20,000 hours. The tweet received over 317,000 likes and 31,200 retweets (shown below, left) in less than a day. On the same day, Twitter[3] user @Catstyle0 uploaded fan art of Lo-Fi Girl disappointed after her video had been taken down. The tweet received more than 2,300 likes and 358 retweets (shown below, right).

Developments

Review Bombing

The company that made the copyright claim was review bombed by people online until its rating was downgraded to 1.1 stars and the name of the company changed to "Negara copyright" (Eng. copyright country). As per July 11th, 2022, the company had been removed from Google Maps[4] (shown below, left and right).

YouTube Responds

On July 11th, 2022, the official Twitter[5] account of Team YouTube replied to @lofigirl about the copyright issue, promising to revive the video within 24-48 hours. The tweet received more than 10,300 likes and 428 retweets (shown below) in less than a day.
