About

Cornplate, also spelled Corn Plate, is a slang word that is used to describe pointing out minuscule and meaningless details in the movie for the sake of keeping up the discussion about it. Spawned by a tweet about the movie Encanto in which a user points out the presence of a plate of corn in one of the scenes, the slang expression was popularized on Twitter and other social media in 2022 and 2023.

Origin

On January 25th, 2022, Twitter[1] user @hourlydolores posted an image of the character Dolores from the 2021 animated film Encanto holding a plate of corn in her hands, writing, "I never realized she was holding a plate with corn in this scene." Later that day, Twitter[2] user @yandhiisntreal quote tweeted the post, commenting, "Y'all are running out of shit to say about this movie I'm crying." The tweet (shown below) garnered over 2,400 retweets and 23,500 likes prior to removal.

Spread

Screenshots of the exchange have been widely circulated online. For example, on January 26th, 2022, Instagram[3] user patrickwarburtonfan53 posted it, earning over 24,000 likes in one year. On January 31st, Redditor big-beandude shared a screenshot, which received over 26,100 upvotes in the /r/shittymoviedetails[4] subreddit in one year (shown below, right).

Starting in mid-2022, a screenshot of the exchange achieved virality as a reaction, being used to reply to posts that pointed out minuscule and meaningless details in movies and other media (examples shown below, left and right).[5][6]

The slang word "cornplate" was coined by Twitter[7] user @camscamshafts, who on October 5th, 2022, quote tweeted a now-deleted post by @Troutglasses reading ":Wait wait wait this tweet says "plate with corn" !!," commenting, "how did you manage to cornplate the cornplate tweet." The post (shown below) received over 2,000 retweets and 25,300 likes in 10 months.

The usage of the image and the slang word to comment on posts about minuscule details in media continued in 2023. For example, on April 10th, 2023, Twitter[8] user @FNaF_Funnies used the screenshot to react to a post about Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, with the tweet gaining over 510 retweets and 9,500 likes in three months (shown below, left). On April 23rd, a Twitter user parodied the Cornplate tweet with a still image from the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie that gained over 2,300 retweets and 45,800 likes in three months (shown below, right).
