Clever Girl

About

"Clever Girl" is a catchphrase that can be used to express respect or admiration for something has demonstrated substantial intelligence. It is often associated with the extinct Velociraptor dinosaur genus. (See also: Philosoraptor, Raptor Jesus)

Origin

In a scene from the 1993 sci-fi film Jurassic Park, the hunter Muldoon, played by actor Bob Peck, attempts to hunt down a raptor in the jungle. While aiming at one of the raptors with a SPAS-12 shotgun that he carefully clicks into place, a second raptor pops its head from the bush to the left. Muldoon looks at the raptor and says "Clever girl" before it pounces on him.

While the line was also used in the 1990 sci-fi film Total Recall, it has no known connection to the Internet meme.

Spread

On March 30th, 2007, a YTMND^[1] page titled "Philosoraptor" was created featuring an image of a raptor from Jurassic Park holding a copy of Plato's Complete Works with the superimposed text "Clever Girl."

On Reddit^[2], it is often used in rage comics where men have been fooled by women, or as a title for an animal performing some impressive feat. A still image of Muldoon from the scene in Jurassic Park was posted on June 6th, 2010 in a thread titled "Clever girl".^[3] A rage comic face using the image was posted on June 9th, 2010, in a comic titled ''I'm on my period, problem? NSFW''.^[4]

The image is used in a similar fashion to the "Oh Crap" rage face.

Search queries for "clever girl" associated with "jurassic park" picked up in March of 2009, and peaked in April of 2010.
