Chi Unsettles Her Dad refers to a series of memes based on several panels from Teasing Master Takagi-san manga in which character Chi pranks her father Nishikata on April Fools by telling him that she hates him. In April 2020, memes based on the panels gained significant popularity in /r/Animemes subreddit.

Origin

On April 7th, 2020, chapter 130 of Teasing Master (Former) Takagi-san (jap. Karakai Jouzu no (Moto) Takagi-san) was published.^[1] In the opening panels of the chapter, character Chi shocks her father Nishikata by telling him that she hates him, with Nishikata quickly realizing that the day is April 1st, and Chi means the opposite of what she is saying (panels shown below).

On April 14th, 2020, Redditor^[2] BeepBeepLettuce123 posted the three top panels of the page to /r/anime_irl subreddit, with the post gaining over 2,000 upvotes in one week.

Spread

On April 15th, 2020, Redditor^[3] Corpse4Vessel posted the earliest found meme based on the panels to /r/Animemes. In the meme, Chi unsettled her father by requesting to watch High School DxD. The post accumulated over 16,400 upvotes in one week (shown below).

Starting on April 15th the format gained significant popularity in /r/Animemes, with edits imagining Chi saying different things to her father. For example, an April 15th, 2020, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure meme by Redditor^[4] Giohnson received over 12,700 upvotes (shown below, left). An Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru meme posted by Redditor^[5] Fandayo on April 16 gained over 4,000 upvotes (shown below, right).

In the following days, the format maintained a notable presence in /r/Animemes, with notable posts including redraws.
