About

Chat Disabled For 3 Seconds refers to a catchphrase in the Rocket League League. When playing the game online, players have chat commands linked to the d-pad on Playstation and other consoles. If a player spams a comment, a notice will come up which reads "Chat Disabled For 3 Seconds." Because of the frequency of this message, it has become a meme in the Rocket League community, as well as spamming comments such as "What a save!" and "Nice hit!"

Origin

Rocket League was released on July 7th, 2015 for Microsoft Windows and Playstation 4.[1] Players play a version of soccer in which the players are small cars. When playing online, players can communicate to their opponents using a small selection of chat options linked to the d-pad. If a player sends too many messages in a small amount of time, the game will disconnect that player from using chat for several seconds (example of a player spamming and getting the message shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the game's release, players began joking about the chat moderation. A thread joking about the feature was posted to the game's subreddit on August 3rd, 2015.[2] Several other threads joking about the message appeared in the subreddit in the coming months, leading to a question about the phrase appearing on /r/OutOfTheLoop[3] on December 23rd, 2015.

There is also merchandise of the meme. On Redbubble.com,[4] people can purchase shirts with the phrase; a car decal is also available on Etsy (examples shown below).[5]

On April 18th, 2017, the official Rocket League Twitter account referenced the joke when posting about how the game had surpassed 30 million players (shown below).
