"But Sire, Our Troops", also known as Thanos's "Just Do It," refer to a memorable scene from the 2019 Marvel superhero film Avengers: Endgame in which character Thanos orders his henchman Corvus to initiate the aerial bombardment of the battlefield. Online, the dialogue has been referenced in memes and used as a three-panel format.

Origin

On April 26th, 2019, Marvel superhero film Avengers: Endgame premiered in the United States.^[1] In one scene of the film main villain, Thanos orders his henchman Corvus to start the aerial bombardment of the battlefield without waiting for their army to retreat (exchange shown below).

- Rain fire!
- But sire, our troops!
- Just do it!

On May 9th, 2019, Redditor im_sorry_wtf posted a three-panel meme based on the scene to /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it gained over 3,400 upvotes in two months (shown below).^[2] On the same day, im_sorry_wtf used the image to reference Nike's "Just Do It" ad campaign.^[3] In the following days, the format saw a limited spread on Reddit.^[4]^[5]

In mid-May 2019, the scene has been referenced in several popular memes on Instagram (shown below, left and right).^[6]^[7]

On May 28th, 2019, Facebook user Moshe Gelberman posted a meme referencing the scene to Marvel Shieldposting group, where it gained over 3,500 likes (shown below, left).^[8] In the following month, more memes both referencing the dialogue and based on the three-panel format were posted in the group (shown below, center).^[9]^[10] On July 9th, 2019, Facebook used Sathya NC posted a meme which gained over 11,000 likes in the group (shown below, right).^[11]

In the following days, Sathya NC's post has been reposted on Facebook,^[12] 9GAG^[13] and Reddit, promoting the further spread of the format. In mid-July 2019, the format saw extensive use on Reddit, with multiple notable posts appearing in /r/dankmemes subreddit.^[14]^[15]
