Origin

On June 14th, 2022, Twitter^[1] user @funnycats22 shared several AI-generated greentexts created with the GPT-3 language model. One of the shared greentexts told a story of a person working as a bottomless pit supervisor who one day discovers that the pit in his charge is no longer bottomless. Unable to fix the issue, the person quits his job and becomes a regular pit supervisor instead. However, on his first day, he discovers that the new pit is bottomless (shown below). The tweet received over 13,200 retweets and 72,100 likes in 10 days.

Spread

In the following days after the initial post on June 14th, 2022, the greentext received viral spread through reposts. Additionally, in the Twitter^[2][3] thread, other users replied with AI-generated greentexts based on the same prompt (examples shown below, left and right).

Following the viral spread of the post, it was referenced in memes. For example, on June 18th, 2022, Twitter^[4] user @LilithLovett posted a POV meme referencing the story that gained over 3,600 retweets and 52,000 likes in one week (shown below, left). On June 19th, iFunny^[5] user Asbestohs reposted the image, with the post gaining over 12,500 smiles. On June 20th, iFunny^[6] user Fave replied to the image with another reference, with the post gaining over 10,500 smiles in five days (shown below, right).

More memes referencing the greentext were posted on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram in the following days.
