About

Beep Beep Lettuce refers to a series of exploitable images featuring the titular characters from the Nick, Jr. cartoon series Max and Ruby. The basic template for the meme consists of Ruby, a female rabbit in a gown, asking her younger brother, Max, what he thinks of her dress. Playing on the character trait of only saying one to three words per an episode, Max always responds "Beep Beep Lettuce." The phrase "beep beep lettuce" has since become a catchphrase on messageboards.

Origin

The image template for Beep Beep Lettuce comes from the season four episode of Max and Ruby, "The Glass Slipper."[1] In the episode, which aired on January 20th, 2010, Ruby plays Cinderella (shown below), explaining why she is wearing a dress and tiara in the meme.

Online, one of the earliest examples of "Beep Beep Lettuce" occurred on Tumblr. On February 23rd, 2016, Tumblr user daddymoseby[3] posted an image of Max and Ruby in which Ruby says, "mex how do i luk in mai new pants." Max replies, "beep beep lettuce." Ruby then says, "fuck why me."

Spread

Following daddymoseby's initial post, there have been numerous variations to the original post, generally juxtaposing the innocent nature of the characters with something violent and/or offensive.

On the final day of the subreddit /r/me_irl's Meme Schedule, May 29th, Redditors were required to memes related to the phrase "beep beep lettuce." At this point, the meme broke away from the template and became more of catchphrase, allowing users to explore the words further. Redditor isademigod posted one of the most popular examples by writing "Beep Beep Lettuce" through the thumbnails of three separate posts. The posts (shown below) received a combined 15,000 points within 24 hours of posting.

That day, other Redditors used this as opportunity to put "Beep Beep Lettuce" in other contexts. Redditor stickfab[5] posted a Bad Acronym featuring Sonic the Hedgehog.
