Origin

On April 30, 2019, Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a redesign of the platform that would focus on user-friendly accessibility to groups and privacy.[1][2] The new design led to changes in the color palette and a new version of the "f" logo[3]. Following the announcement, at 5:44 p.m (UTC), the profile picture of Facebook's English official page was changed to the new logo's design.[4] Within three weeks, the post received more than 342,000 reactions, 64,000 comments and 15,000 shares (shown below, left).

Many users responded with approval, thanking the platform for their support and complementing the new logo through their comments. One of the earliest examples was posted by Facebook user Ronnie Lee who, shortly after Facebook's update, posted "Beautiful, thanks for sharing Facebook. Now can you get me one of those blue checkmarks on my name?" Within two weeks, the post received more than 130 reactions (shown below, right).

On the same day, the meme page "Social Anxiety Disorder Memes" shared Facebook's post gathering over 400 comments and 2.8k reactions, and users spammed the comment section with the phrase "Beautiful thanks for share Facebook 😍😘",[5] behavior that was repeated on new posts for weeks (shown below). The page "F R E S H S T O L E N M E M E S" shared Facebook's post as well, gathering over 5k comments, 11k reactions, and spam in the comments.[7] A Facebook group named after the phrase was created later that day.[6]

Later that day, the Facebook fan page of Treyarch, developer of the Call of Duty videogame series, updated it's profile picture to which users responded with the copypasta (shown below).[8]

Also on April 30, YouTube user Gavin St. Marie uploaded a short video called "Beautiful thanks for share Facebook 😍😘" (shown below). Users in the comment section responded with the same phrase and some discussed the possible origin of the meme.[9]

On May 2nd, the Facebook page "Social Anxiety Disorder Memes" revisited the meme and posted the copypasta gathering over 400 reactions and 100 comments.[11] Three days later, on May 5th, the page "F R E S H S T O L E N M E M E S" posted the copypasta as well and gathered over 3,000 reactions and 700 coments.[12]

On May 3rd, Redditor GazZzik15 asked about the trend in the /r/OutOfTheLoop/[10] subreddit to which user Crocsx replied explaining it was "for the giggles" and speculated bots could be involved.

On May 8th, the official Xbox Facebook page updated its profile picture and met a similar reaction[14] which confounded many users (shown below). Amid the spam, one of them commented "Am I the only one who doesn’t understand what’s going on here?" to which Xbox replied "Nope."

On May 16th, the page "C r a s h バンディw e e b" joined and posted the same phrase.[13]

On May 22nd, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Salvini posted on Facebook a series of image macros in an attempt to ridiculize allegations against his person under the hastag #colpadiSalvini.[15] This unusual response triggered the "Beautiful thanks for share Facebook" copypasta in the comments (shown below), which was initially speculated to be bot spam attack.[16][17]
