Alphabet Dating or Alphabet Dates is a dating trend and internet challenge where partners plan dates around each letter of the alphabet and go on said dates in alphabetical order, such as "Arcade" for A, "bowling" for B, "concert" for C and so on until they reach Z. The trend has been shared online since as early as 2009 and became popularized as a trend on TikTok in July 2023, first appearing on the app as early as February 2022.
Origin
The earliest known mention of alphabet dating online is a blog post by theromanticvineyard[1] made on April 27th, 2009. In the post, the blogger describes the idea of alphabet dating, writing, "The idea is to start at the beginning of the alphabet and take turns planning a date around that letter. There are obviously 26 letters in the alphabet, so this is a good half a year (or more) of creative date nights." The blogger then took part in the alphabet dating trend, linking a blog post about each date at the end of the piece. The trend spread over the next decade and was reported on by blogs and websites including Verbal Gold,[2] Quirky Little Planet[3] and SAGA.[4]
On February 9th, 2022, TikToker[5] @abbymbenson posted a video about alphabet dating, announcing that she'd be documenting her experience going on alphabet dates throughout the year, garnering over 757,000 views in a year (shown below). This is the earliest known video participating in the trend on TikTok.
Spread
The trend became increasingly popular on TikTok in July 2023 as couples posted videos of themselves alphabet dating. On July 9th and 11th, 2023, TikToker[6][7] @loizzaray posted videos showcasing their alphabet dates, garnering over12.1 million and 66.5 million views in three weeks (shown below, left).
On July 16th, TikToker[8] @jessica.stocker posted a video showcasing her first alphabet date for the letter A, garnering over 2.8 million views in two weeks (shown below). On July 20th, Bustle[9] reported on the trend's popularity on TikTok.
