About

Alligator Loki, sometimes called Croki, refers to the character in the Disney+ show Loki, depicting a gator with Loki's signature horns on his head. He appears in the post-credit sequence of episode four, titled "The Nexus Event," which was released on June 30th, 2021, but is featured prominently in episode five, titled "Journey Into Mystery," which was released on July 7th. The character was widely talked about online as all other Loki's shown in the series have been human, adding to the mystery of the multiverse.

Origin

While the in-universe origins of Alligator Loki are a mystery, the character itself serves as an odd representation of how chaotic the multiverse is within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Within the episode that features Alligator Loki, there are several other variants of Loki that are found, including a President Loki that gets his hand bitten off by the alligator version. This scene was posted to YouTube[1] by the channel agameofantasy on July 7th, 2021, accumulating over 21,000 views in 25 hours (shown below).

On June 30th, 2021, the day of his post-credit teaser scene, Redditor[2] cbigej posted a photo of his TV screen showing the character, simply asking "WHAT IS THIS?!," earning 800 upvotes in eight days in the process. Within this post were multiple threads talking about the new character, Croki, and the various implications that his inclusion has on the series and universe as a whole.

Spread

Before his full character introduction was even done, memes of Croki were already spreading on the /r/LokiTV subreddit. On July 3rd, 2021, Redditor[3] Desperado2049 uploaded a screenshot from an earlier episode that had been photoshopped and caption changed to include Croki talking to Owen Wilson's character Mobius, gaining 6,200 upvotes in four days (shown below).

Following his full episode, various memes and references have been made to him online, mostly as a result of other character's reactions to the Alligator Loki. The characters within the show are shown to react to him the same way that the viewer does: with a fair bit of skepticism combined with tentative acceptance. Twitter[4] user zimniysokol best shows this confrontation between show characters who do and don't know about Croki with a meme posted on July 7th, 2021, which received 8,400 likes in one day (shown below).

Other memes that use Croki use him to reference other obscure Marvel Comics characters, such as the frog version of Thor, a fan favorite oddity. This link between the two is seen in the picture created and tweeted[5] by SadMeganGirls on July 8th, 2021, which received 3,000 likes in 14 hours (shown below).
